One of the first military defenses in the Americas, it is a vast stone fortress, known as a citadel built between the 16th and 18 centuries.  It is recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage site and is the most historically significant building in Puerto Rico. El Morro played an important role as a military base for the United States during World War I and II after it was ceded to them by Spain at the end of the Spanish-American War.  You get the feeling of life in the past when entering the gates of El Morro as you submerge into the history of one of the most intriguing places in the Western World. Historians from all over the globe travel here to see this world-class attraction. So if you do visit the island make sure El Morro is on your list with its spectacular view of the entrance to the San Juan Bay.  Every level has breathtaking views of the Atlantic and colorful walled islet, making it a popular spot for photographers. Many couples come to El Morro for wedding photographs.
