Fort Charlotte – A TOURIST IN THE CARIBBEAN

Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte is a historic Fort completed in 1806 overlooking the Kingstown Harbour, which was designed to guard the harbor during the Napoleon wars.   But, there was something unusual about this Fort, in that the guns were pointed inward to prevent any uprising from the then inhabitants, the Black Caribs, and shipwrecked slaves.  The Fort is also home to the Fort Charlotte lighthouse which adds a beacon of light to the entrance of the Kingstown Bay. It was a significant fortification at the time as it housed around six hundred troops on the island.  One can enjoy a panoramic view of the Leeward side of the island including Kingstown, Young Island, the Caribbean, Bequia, and the Grenadines. It is certainly worth a visit.
