Tortola – A TOURIST IN THE CARIBBEAN

Tortola

Tortola (Spanish for Turtle Dove) is about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico and is a large mountainous island which was formed by volcanic activity.  Sage Mountain National Park is the tallest peak on the island at 1716 feet above sea level. Like other Caribbean islands, sugar production was the main economic industry run by slave labor for over 180 years on the islands. Tortola is the commercial hub for the Financial and Government sections of all the islands and is the main port of entry for a growing mega yacht and cruise Tourism Industry. Today, the island is a booming industry filled with restaurants, shops, government administrative buildings and the official Governor’s house with its historic museum.
